Setting SMART goals is an effective way to clarify your ideas, focus your efforts, and use your time and resources productively. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Here’s how you can set SMART goals:

1. Specific

Clearly define your goal. Be specific about what you want to achieve, why it is important, who is involved, where it will take place, and what resources are needed.

For example- don’t say things like “ I want to read more”, but instead perhaps set a more specific goal like “I would like to read 12 business books in 12 months”.

2. Measurable:

Establish criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of your goal. Define how you will track your progress and know when you have achieved your goal.

For example: if your goal is to increase your investment goals by $36000 for the year, you will need to set aside $3000 each month to achieve this goal.

3. Achievable: Ensure that your goal is realistic and attainable. Consider your current resources, skills, and limitations when setting your goal. Setting a goal that is too far out of reach can be demotivating. Break down larger goals into smaller, achievable milestones.

For example: If you’re working a full time job + having a passion project on the side, it might not be feasible to work out 5 times a week. Think of your busiest week, and think of how many times you’re able to feasibly exercise during your busiest week. For myself, it’s one time a week. I set the goal of workout out at least once a week, and if I have the capacity to work out more than that , I consider it a bonus.

4. Relevant: Make sure your goal aligns with your values, long-term objectives, and overall vision. Your goal should be relevant to your personal or professional growth and contribute to your success. Ask yourself if the goal is worth pursuing and if it will bring you closer to where you want to be.

5. Time-bound: Set a deadline for achieving your goal. Having a specific timeframe creates a sense of urgency and helps you prioritize your tasks. It also allows you to track your progress and make adjustments if necessary.

For example: Instead of saying – “I want to learn a new language”, set a time bound goal like “signing up and committing to a German language class by the end of the year”.

By following the SMART criteria when setting your goals, you can increase your chances of success, stay motivated, and track your progress effectively.

One tool that I’ve been using this year to help me with my SMART goals

https://cultivatewhatmatters.com/products/2024-powersheets-jade

It helps me break down my goals into small achievable goals by months, and into smaller chunks each day as well. There’s also periodic “check-ins” every month built into the tool for me to reflect on what I’ve achieved each month and whether it’s in keeping with my overall goals. It helps me to keep accountable!
